Mitsubishi Electric Project P21 Transformer Plant
Project Name:
Date: Sep-2011
Project Status: Completed
Location: Memphis, TN
Tonnage: 6000
Fabricator: FabArc Steel Supply, Inc.

International Design Services’ scope consists of structural steel detailing and connection design for 300,000 square feet of this plant constructed for the assembly and testing of electrical transformers in Memphis, Tennessee.  This consists of over 6,000 tons of structural steel, not including the joist & joist girders making up the roof structure.  This facility contains (27) cranes ranging in capacity from 2.2 tons to 500 tons.  Heavy laced columns provide support for the large crane girders required to support the loads on numerous cranes in the facility.

In addition to providing structural steel detailing, International Design Services is provided connection design for this project.  The vertical bracing system is comprised of both OCBF and SCBF frames.  Intensive efforts have been made throughout the project beginning with the initial award to achieve value engineering in the bracing structure & roof design as well as continual efforts through coordination with the fabricator and erector to accomplish the greatest efficiencies.  Close coordination with FabArc and Midwest in this process has resulted in the most economical connections and details for the fabrication and erection of the building.  One example of this effort include providing elevation layouts allowing the erector to fully assemble and weld the vertical brace frames prior to erection saving considerable man hours in the field.

Although there was no BIM requirement on this project, detailing was done with Tekla Structures where we have provided the 3D model on a weekly basis to the EOR to aid in review of shop drawings as well as assisting them in completing design of the structure.  Models have also been coordinated with the joist supplier to ensure compatibility.
