Kaiser Permanente South MOB
Project Name:
Date: Aug-2011
Project Status: Ongoing
Location: Denver, CO
Tonnage: 2000
Fabricator: Doherty Steel

This project is a 258,000 square feet (approx. total area), rectangular shaped, 6-story (w/ a Garden Level), 87’-0” tall building structure supported by concrete piles at the foundation. The superstructure consists of steel frames (225 Wide Flange columns & approx.2000 beams & girders) & a series of 12” thick concrete shear walls. The perimeter of the Garden Level is surrounded by concrete retaining walls. As a result, this project has approx. 400 pieces of assorted embeds plates and ledger angles that became a challenge on the detailing end, due to the sheer number and the complexity of several of these items. The perimeter walls of the building are composed of a combination of terracotta & aluminum composite wall panels, as well as CMU & exterior stone cladding system requiring the use of steel ledger angles & HSS cantilever posts with horizontal HSS beams for supports.  The roof supports eight (8) large Air Handling Units (AHU) & two (2) Cooling Towers (CT), all of which are provided with a series of steel platforms & ladders for easy access. All these are situated inside two large terracotta-clad mechanical screen walls, that range from 10’-0 to 14’-0” in height supported by HSS posts & HSS beams.

One of the highlights of the project is the Grand Stair (one of 3 stairs) located at the East entrance of the building composed of HSS stringers & HSS landings supports that cantilever out from the adjacent elevator shear wall enclosed by curtain walls on three sides, visible from the outside. This project is rather unique in a way since the anchor bolts & the embeds/ledgers were detailed in AutoCAD, while the superstructure was detailed in TEKLA. CNC, DXF, NC1 & KSS files were also furnished to the fabricator. The building also boast an array of assorted angle & channel supports for the numerous toilet, fire door & sky fold partitions, as well as the various arms supports. There are also channel supports for more than 100 mechanical, electrical & plumbing slab openings, making it somewhat of a challenge to model into TEKLA due to the initial ambiguity of their location, extent & dimensions.
