Hyundai Transformer US Plant Structural
Project Name:
Date: Dec-2010
Project Status: Completed
Location: Montgomery, AL
Tonnage: 6000
Fabricator: FabArc Steel Supply, Inc.

This structure is a 6,000-ton manufacturing plant producing large power transformers up to 500 tons that is owned by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).  This is HHI’s first power transformer manufacturing facility in the US.  The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2011 and the production to begin in early 2012.

The 6,000-ton transformer plant is composed of massive laced columns, built-up plate crane girders with back-up trusses, long span roof trusses, and vertical braces.  At the early stage of the job, IDS provided a design-assist service to the structural engineer of record (Archiplan US, LLC). The original roof design was composed of large jack trusses running at every grid with intermediate trusses framing into the jack trusses and columns and was redesigned to be a lighter roof composed of just main trusses, roof joists with metal roof deck and horizontal trusses at some locations.

The weight of the truss was considerably reduced which saved the owner a significant amount of money. IDS also produced structural steel shop drawings and erection plans, needed to complete the fabrication of the steel members mentioned above, as well as the stairs and girts.
